BET Ripped The Runway
BET Rip the Runway is not exactly what you would call Fashion Week in NYC, Paris or Milan. It’s Urban Renewal. It’s all about Hip Hop Culture meeting mainstream. Russel Simmons lead the industry by starting Phat Farm. Now a $260 million dollar company, one can’t argue that hip hop artists designing is the Designers who have made their way into urban wear are making no less than a fortune. While some may question the legitamcy of urban wear, one cannot question the dollars being spent on brands like G Unit (50 Cent), Baby Phat (Kimorra Lee Simmons) and Apple Bottoms (Nelly), Sean John (P Diddy) and Rocawear (Jay Z). And there are more. Hip Hop clothing is a billion dollar industry. The swagger of the hip hop artists from the hood has crossed into Macys.
With that being said, BET has a fashion show that is unlike any other. High energy, fast paced, slammin’ muisc, more attitude than you can shake a stick at, and models that don’t have to worry about weighing in because they look like pretzels. Ciara, who is model worthy herself and Chris Brown, the black teen’s dream, hosted.
Models seriously worked the catwalk. Remember Jade, that beautiful model with all the potential but all the attitude a couple seasons ago on America’s Next Top Model? Wearing Amaya Swimwear, she ripped the runway. Another survivor from reality TV was present and accounted for. Remember Mychael Knight who most of America was pulling for to win on Project Runway? His line was represented and he rippped the runway. While viewers and judges were waiting for the ultimate couture show from Mychael Knight, he went back to his roots, the fashion that got him noticed — hip hop inspired urban wear. While white models are the norm on designers’ runways, they are not at BET Rip the Runway. So I’m trying to figure out why the heck Brooke Hogan is representing Apple Bottoms? I’ve noticed that she has a “top”, but she is typical of her race with a lack of bottom. (Excuse me if I offend anyone) Apple Bottoms were created for that bump, that onion, that booty that is hard to fit in Calvin’s, Levi’s and practically every other designer jean you can think of. Listen up Nelly — Keep the Apple Bottoms on the girls with the Apple Bottoms!
